The New Parent’s Guide to Buying a Stroller

Becoming a new parent is hard work. You have to worry about changing diapers, sleepless nights, and all the other awesome joys of parenthood. Buying something like a stroller isn’t typically a walk in the park, but we’re here to help make it easier. Below you’ll find some of our best tips for finding the right stroller for you and your baby. We explain exactly what you should look for in a quality stroller that will ensure your baby has a safe, comfortable ride, and you get the luxuries of awesome storage space, easy pushing, and more.

Safety Features

Obviously the number one priority should be the safety of your child. In order for your baby to be safe in a stroller it needs to have features that accommodate them such as a large seat, decent padding, and a well-made harness. These days most strollers come with all of these features, but some are still built better than others.

For the comfort of your child you’ll definitely want a stroller that has a good-size seat with plenty of padding. The more cushion for your baby, the better. Make sure it’s not made of cheap material, though. Some of the better models also have multiple recline options to help keep your infant as comfortable as possible.

One of the bigger safety features to look for is a good harness. Most strollers are equipped with 5-point harnesses which are excellent. But you also need to check out the padding on the straps for the harness. Some have very little padding or none at all and this can lead to stress on your child’s chest and other body parts. Obviously this isn’t comfortable and, if the stroller gets jerked around somehow or comes to a quick, sudden stop, it can even injure your child. A well-made harness will have plenty of thick padding on the straps for the comfort and safety of the baby.

Another safety feature to put on your checklist is a good-sized canopy. A canopy is used to shield your children from the harmful rays of the sun. The skin and the eyes are exceptionally sensitive on infants. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause problems with eyesight and, as you would expect, sunburns. Look for a stroller that offers a large, preferably dark-colored canopy that will cover your child and keep them out of the sun.

Storage and Folding Options

Aside from your baby’s safety and comfort there are other things to consider, too. First off, as any parent knows, there’s a lot of stuff you need to take with you any time you go out with your child including bottles, snacks, diapers, and other necessary items. Sure, you can take a diaper bag along with you for this stuff, but those are often rather bulky and difficult to lug around on top of pushing a stroller.

Good strollers come with plenty of storage space for these items. Most have a large basket located on the bottom of the stroller that is made to accommodate baby necessities. Some also have a storage unit located on the back, facing the adult.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is easy folding. A stroller that folds up is actually pretty important. Why? Well, you need to make sure it can breakdown enough to fit in your vehicle for one thing. Secondly, it also needs to be able to fit in a space at home (such as closet or mud room). Some strollers are made to fold up with very little effort. Others, however, can be a real pain to break down. For convenience you’ll want to find one that is quick and easy to fold up, but also breaks down into a smaller size for proper storing.

Finally, no matter what you’re buying, price is always something to consider. Not everyone has a big budget to work with. Strollers are available at literally every price point imaginable, from $40 basic models to $800+ luxury models with all the bells and whistles you could ever dream of. Come up with a reasonable maximum amount you can spend on a stroller. Doing so will help you narrow down the options significantly.
